What to expect from Counseling
Your initial session focuses on gathering background information and developing a clear understanding of your current stressors and goals for treatment. This first meeting provides space to discuss concerns such as current symptoms, work and life stressors, family history and dynamics, and other relevant life experiences. If you have questions or concerns about the therapy process, differences between types of therapies, diagnosis process, or expectations, this is an appropriate time to address them.
Frequency of sessions will vary based on your individual needs and goals. Early stages of counseling may include weekly visits, and shift to bi-monthly, monthly, or as-needed sessions, with the intention of addressing primary stressors and past traumatic experiences, while working toward identified treatment goals. Follow-up or maintenance sessions may be scheduled to support ongoing wellbeing or to address new stressors, including loss, grief, or significant life transitions. Therapy sessions are typically 50-90 minutes in length. Extended and intensive sessions may be available depending on the type of service and therapeutic approach.
Mindfulness and grounding exercises may be practiced during sessions, and optional activities such as reading, skill practice, or journaling may be offered between sessions. Applying skills learned in therapy outside of sessions can help support lasting change and integration into daily life.
