Your initial session is used to gather your history and for the therapist to get a full understanding of current stressors and goals for treatment.
The beginning stages of counseling can include weekly sessions, bi-monthly, monthly, or as needed. The goal will be to target stressors until treatment goals are met. Follow-up and maintenance sessions can be used to focus on new life stressors such as loss, grief, or significant life events.
Therapy sessions are either 45 or 90 minutes in length. Extended sessions can be accommodated, depending on type of service and approach.
Mindfulness and grounding exercises will be practiced during the session. Activities, reading, and journaling can be provided as homework. Using skills learned in session and completing homework can help incorporate changes into everyday life.
